With spring in full swing the lawn and garden enthusiasts are eager to get a head start on preparing their yards for the upcoming summer.

Lawn and Garden Journal host Duayne Friesen stated there isn't too much you can do in terms of your lawn at this time.

"I'm the fluffer as far as lawn care goes. Right now it's a little bit to early to anything besides a light raking," said Friesen. "If your lawn is dry and firm enough you can go over it with the mower, just to fluff it. Nothing more than that. No raking or power raking, because the ground is soft."

He added you should wait until your lawn is turning green and then you can do a power raking.

As for per-annuals and shrubs Friesen stated this is the best time to move them.

"If your ground has thawed out enough that you can actually get a shovel in, sometimes it may look like it is okay on top, but you go down four to six inches it still may be frozen," said Friesen. "If it's thawn and you can get at your shrubs or per-annuals. Now is a really good time to do that. Even if you see a few little sprouts starting to show up, that's okay. You can do all of that moving right now and have them settled into their new location. Their roots will be actively growing now, even if the buds don't come out for another month or so. So they are nicely settled in before they face the first heat of the spring and summer."
