Students showcased what they've learned about the art of leadership last week. The community was invited Friday to Border Valley School in Reinland for Leadership Day.

Grade five student Jesse Schmitt explains their school is filled with leaders after learning seven key habits: Be proactive, first things first, begin with the end in mind, think win-win, seek first to understand then to be understood, synergize and sharpen the saw.

Schmitt says being proactive is key, "do things without being asked, even when no one is looking. It's very important for those who aren't leaders right now, but they can turn into leaders."

The school's student leadership groups program is based on Stephen Covey's '7 Habits of Highly Effective People.' Border Valley School has embraced the philosophy by ensuring every student has a job from cleaning the library to helping the custodian shovel the school sidewalks.

It's an opportunity to "show that I'm a leader and I'm responsible," Schmitt explains.
