On Wednesday many students across the country took some time to talk about the issue of bullying and wore pink shirts to help create awareness of the issue. Pink Shirt Day is all about taking a stand against bullying.

Today bullies can be found, not just on the school playground, or in school hallways or classrooms. They are also on the Internet. Technology has allowed bullies to relentlessly attack their victims day and night. Research has indicated that as many as 75% of students have been bullied online, but less than 10% actually report the problem.

As part of Pink Shirt Day in Altona, students at Ecole Elmwood School attended a special assembly Wednesday morning that focused on bullying. Principal Chris Hicks said even though bullying is at a different level in elementary school, it's still important to talk about it.

"We try not to use the term anti-bullying because it's a bit beyond their level. We talk about what the day of pink means in terms of being a good friend, what kindness means and inclusion. We also talk about how everyone can be involved in something despite their opinion or how they look."

Hicks added that students still learn about how the pink shirt came to be and where the story originated from, noting these years are when the student's minds are the most impressionable and what they learn will make a blueprint for who they will be as they get older.

The students had the opportunity during the day to participate in activities with each other that helped them understand the effects of bullying.
