CNH Tax & Bookkeeping has moved to a new location at 490 Main Street in Winkler, and you can expect the same personal face to face service you’ve enjoyed for years, now in a completely renovated space.

“We were running out of space at the mall, both storage space and workstation space, also, we have always wanted to go from renting to owning our own space.,” explained Joshua Neufeld who handles the majority of corporate tax returns and financial statement preparation. “The Main Street location also has good exposure, and is a great, convenient location for customers. For future growth, our main target is personal tax clients, and the new location has good frontage for people looking to get their personal tax returns prepared.”

Cornie and Herman Neufeld (C ‘n’ H) started the business 2008. Herman had been doing some personal taxes for friends and family for a few years already, and Cornie was looking for a business opportunity to work from home. Both wanted to be in a business that connected with everyone, with food, water, and taxes coming to mind. Joshua joined in 2009. Joseph Neufeld started part-time in in 2015, focusing on bank reconciliations, overseeing client’s AP and AR accounts, and preparing accounts for year-end statements and tax preparation.

In 2021 Joshua and Joseph took over the business, but Cornie and Herman still work at CNH, with their input and experience tremendously valued.

“Our main focus has always been to make things easy for the client,” noted Joshua. “People view taxes and paperwork as one of the things they dread. We try to make things as effortless as possible by looking at what makes taxes or paperwork a burden to them, and then try to find simple ways to solve them.”

CNH Tax and Bookkeeping has aimed to maintain a face to face relationship with clients as much as possible, providing ample opportunity to ask questions, and talk to the people preparing their returns or statements.

“The most common complaints we hear regarding accounting services is, ‘We never get to talk to our accountant, it’s always a receptionist or someone who doesn’t work with my papers’ or ‘We don’t understand what we all need to

bring, or what we can all claim’,” explained Joshua. “We have tried our best to have a personal, face-to-face approach, where we get to know as many of our clients on a personal level as possible, being accessible for questions and explaining why we do things. This makes people feel more comfortable, and reduces some of the stress that comes with dealing with these kinds of things.”

Tax season has arrived once again, and Joshua shared these tips:
• Let us know if you bought or sold a property in the tax year, and bring us copies of the purchase/sale documents. CRA requires you report the sale of a home, even if it was your primary residence, and it is not taxable. The purchase of a first-time home may also qualify for the first-time home buyer’s credit.
• Bring your property tax statement, or rent receipts, so we can check if you received all the eligible school tax rebates you are entitled to, and apply for any you haven’t already received.
• The Climate Action Incentive (carbon tax rebate) has been changed from being on your tax refund, and will be paid out in quarterly payments starting July 2022. This means people’s refunds may be a little smaller than they were expecting based on the previous few years.

With the Pembina Valley small business community always on the “grow”, CNH Tax & Bookkeeping is ready to partner with those starting up, and those that have been around for years.

“We can help with business startup, including registering a business name, registering a business number, determining if you need to set up a GST or PST account and collect any sales taxes, as well as help you plan how to pay your income taxes at the end of the year,” said Joshua. “We provide ongoing support such as bookkeeping, payroll services, sales tax filing, and preparation of tax returns. We are flexible, and can also manage accounts receivable and payable, provide reports, and other supports to running a small business. For corporations we can prepare simple financial statements, and corporate tax returns, as well as all of the services I’ve already mentioned. We also work closely with CPA firms that we can refer you to if you need a review or audit engagement, or if you need corporate tax planning advice.”

During tax season CNH Tax & Bookkeeping offers extended hours to provide additional flexibility to drop by after work or on Saturday. From February 21st to April 30th CNH Tax & Bookkeeping is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

“We offer a convenient pickup/drop-off model for getting your taxes done,” noted Joshua. “People can drop off their tax slips, and personal information at any time. Once a tax preparer works on their file, they may be contacted for additional information or clarification. Once the tax return is completed, and ready for pickup, the customer gets a phone call, and they can stop in and sign any time. If anyone feels they could benefit from a consultation, or have additional questions, they can still book an appointment to sit down with someone in person, or they can call and speak to one of the tax preparers with questions.”
