Expansion of Altona's waste water treatment system took one of its final steps towards completion.

Altona town council this week approved the tender submitted for phase 3 of the project to WBS Construction out of Winkler.

"This phase pertains to the building of a sewage treatment facility, which will house some of the filters that will remove the phosphorus from the waste stream," said Altona CAO Dan Gagne.

Phase 3 of the project will cost about $6 million to finish, but once completed, the system is expected to serve the community for the next 40 years based on average population growth of 2 per cent per year.
