The RCMP Holiday Checkstop Program kicked off Friday in Manitoba.

Steinbach RCMP Staff Sergeant Harold Laninga says checkstops will be held this month, targeting more than just impaired drivers.

"We're looking for all types of driving behaviour that can cause trouble," says Laninga. "That includes high risk drivers, such as cell phone use, people not wearing seat belts, and those type of activities that are unfortunately causing deaths in our communities."

To date, there have been 105 fatalities on provincial roadways. The total for 2015 was 80. Within the Steinbach RCMP detachment, four people have been killed in a motor vehicle collision this year, with an additional six in the St.Pierre detachment.

"That's very disconcerting for us and I think it's the reason we all need to be cognizant of these issues," he says. "Make sure we're not drinking and driving, we're not texting, the high risk behaviours, we need to stop this. Those are ten people who have lost and that's way, way too many."

The RCMP Holiday Checkstop Program runs until January 2, 2017. Laninga says on Saturday, December 3 is National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. Four of these days are held throughout the country this year.

Laninga urges motorists that if you're going to have a drink, please use Operation Red Nose to get home safely.
