This weekend the Legends Car Club Drive for Cancer raised around $25,000, nearly double the amount as last year's total.

Club member Russ Toews says this year's event was dedicated to two former members, Bernie Klassen and Murray Wieler, who passed away from cancer in 2018.

"Everybody, I think, put in a little more effort to try and raise some more funds," he said. "It was kind of ironic; Murray Wieler was the one who inititally started this for the club about 15 to 17 years ago ... It hits close to home, that's kind of why we started this all and keep going."

Every year the funds are donated to South Central Cancer Resource.

"Initially when we first started many years ago we were pretty much their whole transportation budget. This year, Gail Shimonek was their representative for Cancer Resource and she said their transportation budget this year is $180,000, so it's gone up exponentially, and we're just trying to help them out as best we can," Toews said.

Approximately 70 people participated in the drive, filling up 35 to 40 cars. The route began and ended in Altona, making stops in Plum Coulee, Miami, Somerset and Manitou along the way.

"There's not many people that cancer hasn't touched, and what South Central Cancer Resource does is totally funded by organizations like us and fundraising; they get no government support," Toews said. "So it's important to us to try and support that."
