The annual Ukrainian Dinner for the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba celebrated its 15th anniversary this weekend in Carman.

South Central Regional Coordinator for the society, Kathy Fehr says, the event continues to draw out people of all ages.

"We keep space open for dance and there's a lot of people that go up to dance. It felt really like a social evening. It was a really fun night, family entertainment kind of evening," says Fehr.

Bob Kowalchuk of Carman started the fundraising dinner in honour of his mother who had Alzheimer's.

She says, "he put it on for a few years and mum came to the event for a few years. She had to be moved into a personal care home, then it wasn't as easy. She passed away and he thought, 'why not just continue with this [dinner] because people are still struggling?'"

Fehr adds that the event is meant to show there is support out their for caregivers, family, friends, and people who live with the disease. There is no cure, but there are people who are going through the same experience.

The night also featured homemade Ukrainian food from "The Crazy Lady" in Carman, a number of prizes for attendees, and live music by the band Rewind.

"They're an incredible band focused on the 50's, 60's, and 70's music, so there's a lot of pop, rock, and doo wop happening . . . Music does something to the soul. Add food to it, it just kind of makes a perfect mix," she says.

"It's great to come out and just relax and enjoy an evening of fun. And you know there's nothing better when we want to relax and rejuvenate [than] to laugh and dance, and have great food and company."

In total, 300 tickets were sold for this year's dinner.
