Winkler and the RM of Stanley will not allow Cannabis retail stores to open within their respective communities.

In Winkler, the plebiscite results revealed 2112 people voted "no" while 923 voted "yes" to allowing physical Cannabis stores in the community. In the RM of Stanley, 665 voted against opening retail stores, while 179 voted "yes".

Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says the city will abide by the wishes of their ratepayers.

"We always said we would leave it up to the people, the people have spoken and we will abide by their wishes," Harder says, adding he doesn't view Cannabis retail sales as a "big money-maker".

"We have done well without it before, and we will just continue to do what we do... we will continue to build our community."

While Harder was acclaimed as mayor, incumbents Henry Siemens, Andrew Froese, Marvin Plett, Michael Grenier and Don Fehr, along with newcomer Karina Bueckert, were elected to city council. Don Cruickshank, Jerry Friesen and Zahid Zehri were not elected.

"The incumbents being re-elected tells me people were happy with what we were doing... and I think Karina is going to be a tremendous asset," Harder says. "And when I look at the vote spread... just over 200 votes between the lowest and the highest, it's a good mix. I think it's going to be a good council."
