The Winkler Comic Con, the first of its kind in Southern Manitoba, is set for Louis Riel Day, February 20.

Deb Penner, Events Coordinator for Winkler, explains she's been searching for the perfect winter event.

"So far, nothing has really clicked and grabbed the public's attention," she says, until now. "Everyone I've talked to has been very supportive and we think this may be the first and only rural comic convention in the country."

Created with the help of Garden Valley Collegiate teacher Darren Crane, the local comic con will feature a number of events including comic book art and artists at the Winkler Arts and Culture Centre, video games and board games at The Bunker and movies and panel discussions at the P.W Enns Centennial Concert Hall.

Comic Conventions occur all over the world and attract fans of comic books, superhero movies, video games and all things geek.

Convention attendees are also encouraged to dress up as their favourite characters and superheroes.

Still in the planning stages, Penner says they are looking for input from the community.

"I would appreciate hearing from people who have attended large comic cons, to help us make sure we do this right," she says.
