In the latest report by the MSTW planning district, Winkler was up from 46 new single-family homes to 58 in the same period. New duplexes totalled eight, up from two last year.

"If you haven't driven past the north end of Winkler, it's just amazing," MSTW General Manager Glen Wieler explains.

"There's a couple of streets going, a lot of single-family, duplexes going up... it's amazing to see all this housing happening, and a lot of it is full. As they get occupancy the moving trucks come in, and then someone's building the house next door."

Winkler leads the region in construction with 198 permits in the first three quarters of the year and more than $37 million in value of work. That's down slightly from 203 permits last year at this time, and down from $62.6 million, though Wieler notes the new elementary school permit accounted for more than $20 million of that difference.

New duplexes totalled eight, up from two last year in Winkler.

In Morden, permits totalled 91, with a value of work pegged at $11.2 million, compared to 103 permits last year with a value of work pegged at just over $20 million. New single-family homes were at 16 by the end of September, down two from the previous year.

Meanwhile, the RM of Stanley came in at 94 total permits worth approximately $12.9 million, compared to 124 permits last year and a value of $19.7 million. New single-family dwellings were on par with last year at 21.

Wieler says the region is seeing multiple major projections reaching completion like the Pine Ridge Elementary School in Winkler and the Best Western and Home Hardware in Morden.

Meanwhile, work continues on Winkler's new bowling alley, along with a new daycare opening in Morden. Other structures like the Meridian Exhibition Centre, Best Western in Winkler and a new clubhouse at the Winkler Golf Course are starting to take shape.
