An accomplished project manager and visionary has a dream for the Winkler water tower.

Cameron Cross, artist, and creator best known for the Van Gogh 'Sunflowers' painting in Altona believes the Winkler water tower could become a major tourist attraction.

Cross recently shared his vision with Winkler City Council, noting water towers are one of Canada's dying visual icons. However, he says the relic could be reimagined as a public space with a distinct water feature. His plan includes a cascading waterfall, creating the impression of a "leaking water tower"; both a fun splash park for families to visit, but also a giant work of art that he hopes to find a way to symbollically tell the story of immigration to the area.

"Whenever a vision is formed a dream is born... things happen," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says, adding they've been looking for ideas to reinvent the water tower for many years.

He says many have balked at the thought of tearing down the derelict structure, explaining the Winkler water tower is an important historical landmark.

While there have been no cost estimates attached to the project, Harder says it's an intriguing concept, "I was really impressed."

Cross also noted the importance of great public spaces and art, such as the giant bean in Chicago, and the economic activity and tourism they attract.
