Preparations are underway in the Town of Altona in anticipation of more rain this weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says a third major low pressure system in as many weeks will bring additional precipitation to areas already experiencing highly saturated ground and overland flooding. It's possible that areas near the International border could see 50 mm.

As a result, crews have shored up 9th St NW and are deploying a tiger dam spanning 1 km in length on top of the berm in order to protect the community as the nearby Buffalo Creek could again swell beyond capacity.

The Town reminds the public that unless you need to access the northwest corner of the community to get to your home, please keep away from the area and allow the team the space it needs to work.

Meantime, nearly 5,000 sand bags have been filled and they can be picked up from the Millennium Exhibition Centre parking lot if you need them to protect your property.

The Emergency Operations Centre continues to be active, and can be reached at 204-324-8190 or mec@altona.ca
