Bothwell Cheese has shut down its plant in New Bothwell after recalling some shredded cheese products for possible Listeria contamination.

Mike Raftis, director of sales and marketing, says they believe the contamination could stem from a newly installed piece of equipment.  He notes that equipment has already been decommissioned and removed from the plant.

Raftis adds the shredded cheese is the only product which ran on that particular line.  But he says they are also being proactive and sanitizing the entire plant from the top down.
Raftis expects they will go back into production Wednesday or Thursday.

He says this is the first time ever the plant has had a contamination scare and adds it's embarrassing.

Raftis says most of the cheese affected by the recall was sold in Manitoba although some also went to Quebec and Saskatchewan.
