Monsanto Canada has established a Grower Advisory Council which will provide strategic advice and guidance on issues that impact its Canadian business.

Former federal agriculture minister Charlie Mayer will be the chair.

He explains the council is modeled after Monsanto's U.S. council formed in 2001.

Mayer feels it will help change the adversarial nature of the relationship between farmers and suppliers.

He adds the furor which arose over Round Up Ready wheat in Western Canada probably played a role in the council's establishment.

Council members include Canadian Canola Growers Association, Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association, Grain Growers of Canada, Ontario Soybean Growers, and Ontario Corn Producers Association.

The group held its inaugural meeting late in November.
