CFAM 950 officially marks 50 years of community service radio today.

March 13th, 1957 marked the start of local broadcasting in rural southern Manitoba.

Elmer Hildebrand, president and CEO of Golden West Broadcasting, was part of the staff when the station went to air.

Hildebrand says he's struck by the number of people who still remember CFAM's first day on the air.

He says there were a lot of growing pains in those first few years, but despite that, the radio station continued to attract a loyal and growing audience as it continued to provide service to the local community.

A number of events have been planned throughout the year, allowing CFAM radio to celebrate 50 years with its listening audience.
