Keystone Grain in Winkler has been bombarded with calls from growers wondering when to dessicate sunflowers.

Purchasing Manager Grant Fehr to begin with the back of the heads should be a pale yellow.

In addition the bracts, the leaflets around the head which hold the seeds in, should no longer have any green colour to them and in fact should be starting to brown.

Fehr stresses there's only one product registered for use on sunnies in Canada, and that's Reglone.

He adds for obvious reasons Round Up would be a great option, but it's not registered.

Fehr says this year's crop is one of the best he's ever seen.

He expects combines to begin rolling some time this week.
