The sluggish economy seems to be having an impact on immigrant families in Southern Manitoba.

Lori Sawatzky, with South Central Settlement and Employment Services in Winkler, says often immigrant workers are the first to be laid off, or put on work share when companies experience slow activity.

There are jobs available in the region, but for some new comers, the process of finding other employment is taking longer than expected.

Sawatzky says a good command of the English language becomes important when trying to find other employment.

She notes a slower than normal economy has meant high enrolment for English language courses in the area.
