The Mayor for the Rural Municipality of Ritchot is hoping to join the Executive Committee for Association of Manitoba Municipalities. Chris Ewen has been nominated by his council to run for the position of Vice President.

Association of Manitoba Municipalities, or AMM is a lobby group representing municipalities across our province. According to AMM, it provides the support and leadership needed to promote strong, functional councils that truly represent the order of government closest to the people.

The AMM Executive Committee consists of a President and two Vice Presidents. Ewen says he is hoping to fill one of the Vice President positions on a two year term.

"I think there definitely is a spot for me," adds Ewen, who says the position would both interest him and be a learning experience.

Ewen says by starting as Vice President, he thinks it would provide the opportunity to learn more about other municipalities, giving him the chance to also share his knowledge. Ewen says it would also open the door to meet more people who put their blood and sweat into the position on council or administration.

"And just learn how they are doing their jobs and how we can help them with their jobs or they can help us with our jobs," adds Ewen. "So it's more about a collaborative initiative, as well as just understanding municipal politics all around Manitoba."

AMM delegates will cast their votes at this year's virtual annual convention November 23rd.

Ewen says if elected, he will continue to serve as Mayor for Ritchot. He notes thankfully they have a great council in the municipality and so if the position pulls him out of Ritchot on occasion, the rest of council will be more than capable of taking care of business.
