The Winkler Flyers suffered their first loss at the 2024 Centennial Cup Saturday in Oakville, Ontario.

Ryan Duguay scored the shootout winner as the Melfort Mustangs edged the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions 6-5.

Jakob Jones, Brody Beauchemin, Connor Jensen, Dalton Andrew and Zach Nicolas scored for the Flyers.

Aidyn Hutchinson’s power play goal at 12:11 of the third period extended the Mustangs lead to 5-3.

Andrew scored his fifth goal of the tournament on the power play at 14:05 and Nicolas potted the tying goal with 22 seconds left in regulation and Winkler netminder Malachi Klassen on the bench for an extra attacker.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions went 3-for-9 with the man advantage while the Flyers were 3-for-3.

The Mustangs outshot Winkler 36-28.

Flyers head coach Justin Falk said discipline and detail were the difference.

“Good to get one point in tournament format, lots of positives to continue to build on,” noted the Winkler bench boss. “Can’t give teams those types of opportunities to build momentum with power plays.”

The Mustangs lead Group B with six points.

The Flyers have four points and will face the host Oakville Blades Monday night.
