Those who have a doctor's appointment at the Altona Medical Clinic may want to bring their own reading material.

The clinic waiting room has a rather spartan feel to it, now that all magazines and children's toys have been removed.

Chief of Staff, Dr. Ken Kliever, says the room was stripped down to help prevent the spread of H1N1 influenza, and they intend to take further steps for people waiting at the clinic  once the flu season begins.

Kliever says they will be handing out masks to people suffering from serious coughs, and will provide extra hand washing facilities.

Kliever suggests the clinic's stark appearance will be temporary, although no one knows how long the H1N1 flu threat will last.

He says it's a small inconvenience that people will need to get used to.
