The Legends Car Club recently held two events in support of South Central Cancer Resource. Their Fundraising BBQ and Car Show was held May18th at Janzen Chevrolet in Winkler, and their Drive for Cancer was held on May 25th in Altona.

The Legends Car Club holds many events throughout the year and are great supporters of SCCR. For more than 15 years the Legends have raised over a quarter million for SCCR, says SCCR spokesperson Erika Friesen, “This is a remarkable number, and we are extremely grateful for the dedication of the car club and their supporters. SCCR receives no government funding and is completely reliant on fundraising events – large & small to run our programs. Support from organizations such as Legends Car Club is so vital in sustaining our programs. We hope our relationship will continue for many years to come.”

On June 18th, Legends Car Club presented a cheque for $27,225 to SCCR. Lyle Dunsmore is an active member of Legends Car Club.

“When we started this project, we raised $25,000 the first year and that was their transportation budget to carry people to Winnipeg. I believe last year it was around $212,000, which is an astronomical amount of money.”

Dunsmore says that Legends Car Club has been directly impacted by SCCR.

“Sadly, [we have lost] members of our club to cancer. We have members right now who are dealing with cancer. The work that SCCR does can't be provided by anybody else [than SCCR] because of how specific their services are [such as] transporting people who need to go to Winnipeg for treatment.”

At age 71, Dunsmore says that cancer seems to be more and more common.

“As you get older, sadly you know more and more people who are dealing with this disease and a lot of them don't have the support network that they need to get the treatment that they deserve, so, we are only too happy to help out in our small way and in memory of a lot of the members that we have lost over the years to cancer.”
