A market analyst at Manitoba Pork Marketing Co-op feels there may be a rally in hog prices during the last half of the 4th quarter.

Director of Risk Management Tyler Fulton believes the heaviest supplies of hogs and competeting meats like beef will hit the market in early September.

As a result he thinks producers should hold off on taking any protection on production as better opportunities may exsist in the future.

As for the 3rd quarter, Fulton recommends taking protection on 30 to 50 percent of production for the early fall months.

He believes, considering cattle slaughter is up 5 to 6 percent over last year and more cheap beef will be hitting the market, current forward contract prices represent a good value.
