An M.L.A. from the heart of Manitoba’s hog production country is expressing disbelief over a moratorium placed on hog barn construction and expansion.

The move was taken by the Doer government while the Clean Environment Commission reviews the N.D.P.'s Water Protection Plan.

Steinbach rep Kelvin Goertzen says producers in his riding are in shock after learning of the pause last week.

Goertzen believes the move was strictly political, and not based on scientific fact.

He adds the issue will be raised in the Legislature, particularly how the announcement was handled with no advance warning given to the industry.
