After years of being on the drawing board, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has released a set of proposed standardized organic products regulations.

Spokesperson Michel Saumur says the regs will govern the use of a "Canada Organic" logo, plus include certification requirements for organic agricultural products.

Three scenarios were considered during the development process, but federal regulation with accreditation and certification delivered by third parties is being recommended.

Saumur notes part of the reason for the standards being established is to satisfy European Union requirements which come into affect at the end of the year.

As of December 3st1, 2006 the E.U. requires all countries exporting organic food to it be on an approved third-country equivalency list.

A comment period on the proposed regs will close in November.

Saumur hopes they can be enacted before the end of the year.
