Manitoba Cattle Producers Association has presented the Province an alternative to its mandatory, non-refundable cattle levy.

The money collected from the $2 check-off would support the expansion of slaughter capacity in our province.

Past President Larry Schweitzer says the option would ensure cattlemen retain their right to choose how their money is invested.

The plan calls for a per head check-off to be paid by producers at the slaughter facility of their choice, with the province matching 75% of the money raised.

Schweitzer feels their option has several merits including allowing producers to gain an equity position in plants, something not currently available under the government's mandatory levy.

He adds it will also help with the re-establishment of local slaughter capacity.

The proposal has been presented to Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk.

Schweitzer expects a meeting to discuss it will be held in the near future.
