Progress is being made on the establishment of a national agriculture and food traceability system.

Manitoba's Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Wayne Lees, is part of the federal-provincial taskforce working on the project.

He says the goal is to build on the systems already in place, and add to their scope.

Lees notes cattlemen have raised a number of concerns over the proposal mostly revolving around cost, paperwork, and whether the new system will simply be a duplication of what C.C.I.A. is already doing.

He says the taskforce is addressing those concerns, and he believes public dollars will be on the table to help offset costs.

There's no firm time line on when the national system will be launched, and Lees stresses the project is just at the conceptual stage.
