The first-ever Smile Cookie Campaign at the newly opened Tim Hortons in Altona was an overwhelming success. The week-long initiative raised $16,062.00 for the Altona and Area Family Resource Centre (AAFRC).

In an email to PembinaValleyOnline after the total was tallied, franchise owner, Rupesh Patel, said it feels great to get involved with a local charity that is doing so much for early childhood and parents.

Nina Edbom-Kehler, executive director for AAFRC, added, this money is a welcome relief, adding the Centre will be able to continue paying its staff. It will allow the Centre to focus on programming and the needs of the preschool families in our communities, instead of seeking out grants, especially when most grants don't cover wages.

She added, this example of people helping people is what the Centre needs.

Meantime, our sweet tooth helped rake in $20,908.70 at the Morris Tim Hortons, also owned by Patel.

100% of the proceeds from every Smile Cookie sold at that location this past week will go phase 2 Willow Park's development, a picnic shelter. According to the Willow Park social media page, the structure will feature 2 family washrooms, a canteen and BBQ rental space.

Phase 1 of the park, which includes one of the biggest playgrounds in Manitoba, was officially opened last July, and was received with enthusiasm from the community.
