A species on the brink of being called extirpated is making a comeback in our province.

Burrowing owls have been spotted for the first time in a number of years.

Manitoba Conservation's Species-at-Risk Biologist Ken De Smet says the owl is still extremely endangered.

The majority of the sitings have been in the southwest region but De Smet says he expects the birds could be as far east as the Red River.

He explains the burrowing owl is roughly the same size as a robin and makes its nests on the ground, typically on pastureland.

De Smet adds if people spot the bird they should contact their local conservation officer.
