Merek Degraeve scored twice and Derek Wiebe had three assists as Pembina Valley downed the Transcona Railer Express 6-3. Riley Goertzen, Mark Plett, Mike Heppner and Max Collet also scored for the Twisters. Pembina Valley’s Logan Enns made 47 saves.


Jayden Wiens scored the winning goal in the ninth round of the shootout as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4. Jaxon Jacobson had a pair of goals in regulation for the Wheat Kings who have won four in a row and are 3-0 on their eight-game homestand. Nate Danielson and Brett Hyland also scored for Brandon.


Canada West fell 4-1 to the United States in their lone pre-tournament game prior to Sunday’s start of the 2023 World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia. Winnipeg’s Rylan Brown, who plays for the MJHL’s Niverville Nighthawks, scored the lone goal for Canada West who will face Sweden in their preliminary round opener.


The Manitoba Moose gave up three goals in the second period and three more in the third and lost 6-2 to the Calgary Wranglers. Danny Zhilkin and Brad Lambert did the goal scoring for the Moose.


Dave Boehmer will face Bruce Korte of Saskatchewan in the semifinals of the Canadian Senior Curling Championships in Vernon, BC. Boehmer, Dale Lott, Sean Bracken and George Hacking finished with an 8-2 record in the championship pool. Joelle Brown had a 5-5 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
