The Morden Thunder, Morris Mavericks and Pembina Tigers were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Friday night. Gavin Funk scored the shootout winner as the Thunder edged Portage Collegiate 4-3. Rylan Keck had a hat trick as the Mavericks beat the Mountain Mustangs 5-0. Cole Patenaude had a four-point night with three goals and a helper as the Tigers downed the Miller Aces 6-2.


Gavin Waltz scored the go-ahead goal 11 minutes into the third period as the Winkler Flyers beat the Winnipeg Blues 5-4 at the Centennial Arena. Zach Nicolas, Connor Jensen, Mike Svenson and Trent Penner also scored for the Flyers who led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after 40 minutes. The Blues scored three times in a seven-and-a-half-minute span of the third period to tie the game at 4-4.


Derek Wiebe and Nico Vigier had two goals each as Pembina Valley beat the River East Royal Knights 8-3. Merek Degraeve, Caelan Russell, Slade Sotheran and Max Collet also scored for the Twisters who are on a seven-game points streak.


The Pembina Valley Hawks lost 5-4 in overtime to the defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Wild. Sebastien Hicks had a goal and an assist for the Hawks who led 4-2 with six minutes left in the third period.


Kaitlin Anderson had a hat trick in Pembina Valley’s 8-1 win over the Central Plains Capitals. Emily Foster and Mya Pearce added two goals each for the Hawks.


Carson Bjarnason made 34 saves as the Brandon Wheat Kings opened their three-game Alberta road trip with a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen. Quinn Mantei scored the go-ahead goal with 2:50 remaining in the third period. Nolan Flamand added an empty netter with 13 seconds left.


Grace Beaudry of St. Vital and Jordon McDonald of Deer Lodge have qualified for the finals at the 2023 Provincial Junior Curling Championships in Portage. Beaudry beat Zoey Terrick of the Heather 8-6 and McDonald downed Jace Freeman of Virden 9-1 in the 1-2 Page Playoff games. Terrick will meet Cheyenne Ehnes of Pembina and Freeman will take on Ronan Peterson of the Heather in the semifinals. Ehnes stole single points in the 9th, 10th and extra end and defeated Tansy Tober of Fort Garry 10-9 while Peterson beat Colton Olafson of Portage 9-1 in the 3-4 games.
