The San Jose Sharks selected Boston University forward Macklin Celebrini with the first overall pick of the 2024 NHL Draft Friday night in Las Vegas. The North Vancouver native recorded 32 goals and 32 assists in 38 games with the Terriers and won the Hobey Baker award as the top men’s player in NCAA hockey. No Manitobans were selected in round one. Rounds 2-7 will take place today.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers face the Calgary Stampeders tonight (6 p.m.) at McMahon Stadium. Receivers Josh Johnson and Jeremy Murphy are on the game day roster replacing Dalton Schoen and Keric Wheatfall who were injured in Winnipeg’s 26-24 loss to the B.C. Lions in week three. Defensive back Deatrick Nichols also returns to the lineup.


Winnipeg starter Travis Seabrooke allowed just three hits over seven innings of work in the Goldeyes’ 9-0 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Dayson Croes had three hits and Miles Simington drove in three runs for the Fish.


Canada will play its final group stage match tonight against Chile at Copa America in Orlando. Canada has a win and a loss and will advance to the knockout round with a victory over Chile.
