The Winkler Flyers raised the curtain on the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season Friday night. Malachi Klassen made 17 saves as Winkler defeated the Winnipeg Blues 3-1 in their home opener at the Centennial Arena. Brady Craik, Noah Diemer and Mike Svenson did the goal scoring for the Flyers.


The Pembina Valley Twisters gave up four unanswered third period goals and lost their pre-season finale 6-3 to the Jets in Stonewall. Mark Plett scored twice for Pembina Valley. Cohen Thomas had the other. The Twisters play their Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League season opener next Friday against the River East Royals Knights in Morris.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost their Western Hockey League home opener 7-6 to the Regina Pats. Braxton Whitehead scored the winner 52 seconds into overtime for the Pats. Roger McQueen had a goal and two assists for the Wheat Kings who face the Warriors in Moose Jaw tonight.


It’s day three of Winnipeg Jets training camp at Hockey for All Centre. Team Numminen will practice at 10 a.m. and Team Selanne will hit the ice at 1 p.m. The Jets play their first of six exhibition games Sunday against the Oilers in Edmonton.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced that next Friday’s home game against the Toronto Argonauts is sold out. This marks the third consecutive sellout of the 2023 season and the first time the Blue Bombers have sold out three games in a season at IG Field since the stadium opened in 2013.
