Kaydence Wiens scored both Eagles goals and Janessa Nelson was stellar in goal as Morden U17 shaded Bonivital U17/18 2-1 in the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association's Recreational Division.


A goal by Lizbeth Ovalle in the 70th minute allowed Mexico to earn a 1-1 draw with Canada's national women's soccer team in a friendly in Toronto. Kadeisha Buchanan's goal gave Canada a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute, but despite controlling ball possession and shots on goal, the hosts had to settle for the tie. Canada beat Mexico 2-0 on Saturday in Montreal.


Canada's national men's volleyball team kicked off week two action at the Volleyball Nations League Tuesday in Ottawa. Steinbach's Eric Loeppky recorded 22 points as Canada defeated Cuba 3-1. The 10th-ranked Canadian squad, who have already qualified for next month's Paris Olympics, play Argentina on Thursday. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes were shutout 1-0 by the Kane County Cougars. Winnipeg starter Landen Bourassa took a no-hitter into the seventh inning when he gave up a lead off home run to Kane County left fielder Je’Von Ward. Bourassa went the distance, surrendering just two hits while striking out eight. The Fish and Cougars wrap up their three-game series today (11 a.m.) at Blue Cross Park. 


Nolan Baumgartner has joined the Ottawa Senators as an assistant coach. Baumgartner, 48, served as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League's Manitoba Moose the past two seasons. Manitoba reached the post-season in both campaigns and amassed a 71-60-8-5 record with Baumgartner on the staff. The Calgary native worked with 18 Winnipeg Jets draft picks during his time with the Moose. A total of 13 players played for both the Moose and the Jets while Baumgartner was behind the Manitoba bench.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released American offensive lineman Larnel Coleman from the practice roster. The Bombers open the 2024 CFL season Thursday night at home against the Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes.
