Manitoba legislators have given their unanimous support to a private member's resolution, urging government to support the creation of a foreign trade zone at Centreport Canada.

The inland port is under development at James Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg.

Premier Gary Doer feels a foreign trade zone would make Manitoba competitive with regions of the United States that already have implemented foreign trade zones.

He adds if we can develop a comparable zone in Canada it will most likely attract business to our province.

Businesses may store, manufacture, process, and re-export goods in foreign trade zones, without paying duties and taxes.

Meanwhile, Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFayden and his fellow Tory M.L.A.'s are calling on the N.D.P. government to create a same-day breast cancer rapid diagnosis centre.

McFadyen says right now in Winnipeg, 260 patients are waiting an average of six weeks for diagnosis....

He says there is an example of this type of clinic in Ontario.

The hospital in Toronto has implemented a same-day rapid diagnosis centre, cutting an average 37 day wait to just hours in many cases.

Both leaders made the comments for The Premier's Report, which you can listen to on CFAM Radio 950 at 11:45 am and Country 1570 CKMW at 12:15 pm on Fridays when the Legislature is in session.

The Other Side with the leader of the Official Opposition can be heard on CFAM Radio 950 Fridays at 1:15 pm.
