Winkler Fire Department was called out to a shop fire Friday afternoon north of the city.

The call came in around 4:30 p.m., with the yard site about four miles north of Winkler on PR 428. The shop's alarm system had notified the owners of the blaze.

Chief Richard Paetzold said when crews arrived they found the owner had knocked down the fire in the shop's interior with a garden hose, but it had spread into the attic.

"Crews accessed the attic and roof, and extinguished the remaining fire," he said. "The fire damage was limited, but there was extensive smoke damage."

There were no injuries in the incident, and the cause remains under investigation.
