Do you have used batteries laying around that you don't know what to do with? Well, the City of Winkler has a solution.

A household battery drop-off has been set up at the Meridian Exhibition Centre.

"You can drop off any single-use or rechargeable dry call battery weighing up to five kilograms," explained Mayor Henry Siemens, noting this includes batteries for things like e-scooters and e-bikes.

So, why establish the drop-off?

"We want to get these things out of our landfill," said Siemens. "Too often we find that people don't know what to do with batteries, they hang on to them, they're in the way and finally, you just chuck them in the garbage. So, we're asking to help use keep them out of the landfill, bring them to the Meridian Exhibition Centre and we'll take care of everything else from there."

That means the batteries will get picked up and brought to consolidation centres where they will be sorted and sent to a recycling depot for further processing.

The drop-off is open at the Meridian Exhibition Centre from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
