A wanted man from Nova Scotia is behind bars after he was apprehended by Winkler police last month.

According to RCMP, local officers were tipped off about two hitchhikers in the area, and that one of them was believed to be from the Maritime province. Police were already aware of an abandoned vehicle, found the day before, which had been reported stolen in Nova Scotia and was associated to the wanted man. He was quickly located, identified and arrested.

Based on evidence collected by Winkler Police, RCMP say investigators believe the man was attempting to cross into the United States.

He was brought back to Nova Scotia where was charged in a sexual assault case involving a child dating back to 2020, as well as Failure to Comply with an Undertaking. He was recently sentenced to 9 years in jail for those offenses.

RCMP say the man is due back in court later this month in relation to a charge of Motor Vehicle Theft.
