Dazzling tattoos among many children’s activities at Winkler Harvest Festival
This weekend, Winkler will be buzzing as the annual Harvest Festival takes over the city from August 8th to 10th. Along with a parade, a midway, live musical entertainment, and an all-star line-up of food trucks, there will also be a variety of programming for children, including a petting zoo, obstacle course, and princess/hero pictures. Another vibrant, glimmering option will be offered by Shining Expressions, a business that adorns young festival goers with temporary tattoos. Different types of tattoos Mary Tanis Wilson, a co-owner of Shining Expressions with her husband, Mike, said that while the business started off providing only glitter tattoos, it has expanded its services. According to Wilson, its glow-in-the-dark tattoos are “really starting to take off.” She said the business also offers mica tattoos. "It’s like an eye shadow pigment, so if somebody doesn't want the loudness of the glitter, it’s more of a slight shimmer,” she said. “We have many, many colours, but it's not as loud.” 4 years of business Shining Expressions has been adding a touch of festivity to events in the Pembina Valley for four years now. EtherLAN is powering up at Winkler Harvest Festival Wilson, known for her enthusiasm for glitter, was inspired to start the business by another vendor she encountered giving out shimmering tattoos at a festival. “I really, really loved the idea,” she said. “I thought it was super neat when I saw that it's not something that just lasts like a couple of hours or a day — it's something that can be enjoyed for days and sometimes for weeks.” Custom stencils Wilson said that Shining Expressions started by purchasing kits from a supplier, but before long, the pair decided to make their own stencils with software that Mike uses. The result is that not only can the business quickly replace stencils that it has run out of at events, but it can also create custom designs for customers.
