A new boardgame is bringing a classic closer to home.

Winkleropoly, a customized version of the classic Monopoly boardgame, is flying off the shelves,

"I'm so happy it's being embraced... especially during this time when people are stuck at home," Outset Media's VP of Marketing Jean Paul Teskey says.

He notes the project scope saw over 90 communities earmarked for their own themed games, but were surprised to find the smaller cities and towns quickly outsold larger centres.

"They did well, but it was the smaller communities that embraced the idea even more so," he says, adding they sold more Sarnia theme game, a small town in Ontario, than Toronto and Vancouver combined last year.

When looking for communities to feature, Teskey says he began looking for smaller cities. "Winkler came up because I thought it would be a perfect size, and obviously it has done really well. This year we've had more success than ever with the selections we've done."

Their research team in Victoria, B.C looks for unique local streets, businesses and festivals to give the game local flavour. The company is able to quickly launch the locally-themed game as they're produced in North America in a limited run.

Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says he personally picked up seven games and returned the next day to find the display had been sold out. "It's exciting to see," he says.
