After months of lobbying, speeds are finally lowering on a Winkler street running through a pedestrian-heavy area.

"For all the parking and kids on that street I think it's the right thing to do," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says. "That's why we didn't want to give up."

The City of Winkler had fought the province's Highway Traffic Board for months before they agreed to lower the speed on 15th St. from 70 km/h to 50 km/h.

The reduced speeds will take effect from PTH 14 South to the rail crossing.

"Our efforts paid off," Harder says.

City Council gave a detailed presentation of their concerns last month to MIT, including a site map indicating the adjacent sports fields, skate park, crosswalks and future school.

The city had also completed traffic studies earlier this summer, which revealed over 5,000 vehicles travel the street each day.

New speed limit signs are expected to be installed soon.
