Western School Division (WSD) is set to break its own record for Kindergarten registration.

Superintendent Stephen Ross says in the 2017/18 school year they had around 163 kindergarteners and are expecting more again for the 2018/19 school year.

"Compared to about a year ago exactly... we are about a dozen students above that number," said Superintendent Stephen Ross.

The City of Morden's Immigration Initiative also plays a factor in the increased enrolment.

While the division isn't worried about a lack of space at this time, Ross said they foresee issues in the future. He explained classes have increased by an average of 10% from their first year till middle school, and another increase is expected before they hit high school.

The division recently requested a new school to help house the increasing population.

"It obviously supports the idea that we need a new school and with all of the other things out there these numbers are really pushing that," said Ross.

"When you know most of the groups now in the elementary end are 140-160 plus and those numbers are just getting larger every year. It puts a lot of pressure on other places," said Ross.

As the Division grows so does the funding they'll receive from the Provincial Government, but this is only half of the Divisions annual funding. With the increased students means they'll have to add more classrooms, which need teachers to teach the students filling those classes.

Ross said they will be having to add two more middle school classrooms next year because of the increase in students.

"We'll just have to watch and be careful that we have a little bit of money in reserve in the event that we have to add classes that we don't expect because of extra large growth," said Ross.
