The 9th Annual Groovehound Studio drum recital will take place on June 20th.

Mike Hiebert, a local musician and drum instructor who studied at the Los Angeles Music Academy, organizes the event as a chance for his students to show off their hard work.

Hiebert says that this year’s theme is Canadian music.

“[The students could] come in riding a moose with a RCMP uniform, drinking Tim Hortons with a Canada goose on their shoulder.”

Even if participants do not come in riding a moose, Hiebert says that the aim is to “celebrate all the musicians from Canada.” For the most practiced student who “most closely connects themselves and their fans to the Canadian theme,” there will be a grand prize, according to Hiebert.

Attendees can look forward to hearing music from artists such as Stompin’ Tom Connors, Tim and the Glory Boys, and Rush.

The drum recital takes place on June 20th at 6pm in Bethel Heritage Park. Superior Smash food truck will be at the event.

Hiebert, who has been teaching drums professionally since 2000, currently has 50 students ranging from ages 6-76. 32 will perform at the drum recital on the 20th.

Hiebert says that the recital gives students a “goal to shoot for at the end of the year” and encourages community members to come out to see the show.

“I think that these kids need to see that music brings people together and [that it’s] the whole point of music to begin with. It was never meant to make people millions of dollars. I think it was meant to fill your soul.”
