For anyone ready to show off their soccer skills or teach them, registration for U7-U17 Morden Minor Soccer is still open.

Danny Rocha, the president of the Morden Minor Soccer Association, says that the association is extending registration for players and coaches by one week.

Parents and children from the Carman, Altona, or Winkler regions are also encouraged to sign up with Morden Minor Soccer if they have missed out on registration in their own area.

Rocha stresses that soccer is an accessible sport that benefits its participants.

“You just need a ball . . . . [I]t's very easy to practice at home. It's not as expensive as other sports, and the community is still [close-knit] . . . . [T]here are a lot of good values that soccer brings home, like fair play. We all play as a team, and I think that’s something that the community needs.”

Rocha says that the association is especially searching for coaches. Parents who are interested in coaching do not require prior experience, since the association, now affiliated with the Manitoba Soccer Association, offers a brief online workshop that will prepare them for their duties. Parents who sign up for coaching will have their child’s registration fees waived.

For Rocha, becoming a coach with Morden Minor Soccer is a great opportunity for parents to connect with their children in a positive and welcoming environment.

“[I]f you want to get involved, this is a very fun, affordable way to [take part] in your child's development.”

For those who want to participate in other ways, Rocha says Morden Minor Soccer is interviewing for the position of Equipment Coordinator. There are also positions open on the board for people who wish to “bring new ideas and help . . . improve the program.”

To inquire about the open positions, Rocha invites parents to reach out to the association at mordenminorsoccer.com.

Rocha is grateful for the community involvement that the association has already received, including local sponsors and community members that have shown their support. Rocha invites anyone who wishes to donate to Morden Minor Soccer to reach out via their website.

For Rocha, the lessons learned from soccer transcend the game.

“[One learns] how to behave in a group setting, . . . how to overcome challenges, [and] how to have interpersonal connections.”
