Matheus Ruffini scored three times as the Winkler Storm shaded Niverville Force SC 5-4 Monday night at the Niverville Soccer Complex. Ehk'thweesoe Moon and Santi Bergen also scored for the Storm who have four wins, one loss and one tie in the Manitoba Major Soccer League's 1st Division. Winkler's next game is Sunday night at home against CSSE Juventus. 


Bruce North fired a one-over par 72 and captured the Carman Men's Open this past weekend. North finished two shots ahead of Wayne Giesbrecht, Scott Funk and Rob Bell, Flight winners were Derek Fleury (75), Terry Dyck (89) and Shawn McCutcheon (96). 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes begin a three-game series against the Gary South Shore Railcats tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Blue Cross Park. Landen Bourassa will get the start for the Fish (19-15) who are 3-0 on their nine game homestand and just 2.5 games back of the American Association's West Division leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The Rail Cats (11-23) are in last place in the East Division. 


The Winnipeg Jets have appointed Dean Chynoweth and Davis Payne as assistant coaches under head coach Scott Arniel. Chynoweth, 55, served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs for the past three seasons. The Calgary native previously served as an assistant coach for the Carolina Hurricanes (2018-2021) and the New York Islanders (2009-2012). Chynoweth also worked as a head coach for the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage in the 2015-16 season and for the Lake Erie Monsters (2012-2015). Payne, 53, served as an assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators for the past five seasons. The product of Kamloops also worked for the Buffalo Sabres (associate coach, 2017-2019), Los Angeles Kings (assistant coach, 2012-2017), and St. Louis Blues (head coach, 2009-2012). Payne won a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2013-14. He also served as an assistant and head coach for the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen from 2007 until he was hired as Blues head coach during the 2009-10 season. Chynoweth and Payne will join assistant coaches Wade Flaherty and Marty Johnston, who both return to the Jets coaching staff. 


The Columbus Blue Jackets have fired head coach Pascal Vincent after one season in which they were one of the NHL's worst teams. New general manager Don Waddell announced the firing and said the search for a new coach would begin immediately. The Blue Jackets finished the season last in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 27-43-and-12. Vincent was named an assistant coach of the Winnipeg Jets in July of 2011. After five years in that role, the Jets promoted him to head coach of their AHL team, the Manitoba Moose in 2016. After the 2017-18 AHL season, he won the most outstanding coach award. Vincent stepped down from his position with the Moose to join the Columbus Blue Jackets coaching staff on June 24th, 2021.


Canada men's soccer coach Jesse Marsch has named Bayern Munich star fullback Alphonso Davies team captain ahead of Copa America. Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio was named vice-captain. The 49th-ranked Canadians open Copa America on Thursday against top-ranked Argentina in Atlanta.
