Justice Minister Vic Toews is troubled by the increase in serious crimes involving young children.

He says it's disturbing to hear reports of children as young as nine involved in murders and other serious crimes.

Toews notes the Youth Justice Act contains measures to hold children accountable but also to provide treatment for their anti-social behaviour.

He adds in cases where families have broken down and there are no supports in place, those young people need to be taken into custody and then given treatment for their anti-social behavior.

Toews feels the youth justice act needs work but it's basic premise is correct.
