The Skills Manitoba competition is taking place today at Red River College in Winnipeg, with over 470 competitors in 41 events.

The competition allows vocational students to showcase their talents in an Olympic-style, province wide contest.

Red River Technical Vocational Administrator, Harv Giesbrecht, says about a dozen students from southern Manitoba are participating this year in many different categories.

The categories range from building construction, welding, cosmetology, and food services.

Giesbrecht adds if students are successful in the provincial competition, they have an opportunity to compete in the nationals June 6-9 in Saskatoon.

Two years ago a student in building construction won gold in the nationals for cabinetry.
