The Winkler Police Service is being proactive in helping local businesses protect themselves from fraud.

Constable Chris Kalansky heads the fraud protection program.

He says something they've done over the past year and a half is proving to be quite effective.

When police become aware of a scam taking place, an alert bulletin is forwarded to the Chamber who in turn sends it to their members.

Kalansky adds the Winkler Police will be presenting a series of workshops to the Chamber members on the detection of counterfeit currency and credit cards, as well as fraud detection.

He says although this is not yet a serious issue in our area, they feel it's only a matter of time before the trend reaches Winkler.

Kalansky says the most common fraud they encounter is N.S.F. cheques.
