A stretch of 14th Ave NW in Altona will be closed today as crews work return the road to gravel.

According to the Town of Altona's social media, only local traffic will be permitted through the closure spanning from 9th St. NW to 2nd St. NW and all other traffic will be asked to detour.

The decision to return the road back to gravel was made after two chip-seal applications over a few years were unsuccessful in creating and maintaining a hard driving surface, succumbing to weather and traffic.

While officials promise to explore other hard-surfacing options in the future, they say they are committed to returning the road to a state that it is able to maintain to a higher standard than the current deteriorated state.

As for dust control, town officials say they have found more effective products since the road was originally gravel and are confident they will be able to address those concerns moving forward.
