The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Winkler Flyers play their second preliminary round game today (11 a.m.) against the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Melfort Mustangs at the 2024 Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ontario. Both teams won their openers on Thursday. The Flyers defeated the Superior International Junior Hockey League champion Sioux Lookout Bombers 4-2. The Mustangs downed the Maritime Junior Hockey League champion Miramichi Timberwolves 4-1.


Matthew Savoie scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes remaining in regulation as the Moose Jaw Warriors shaded the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 in game one of the Western Hockey League’s best-of-seven final at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Atley Calvert and Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk also scored for the visiting Warriors. Diego Buttazzoni and Gabe Klassen replied for the Winterhawks. Game two goes tonight in Portland.


Canada plays its preliminary round opener today (5:20 a.m) against Great Britain at the 2024 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Prague. Canada is in Group A with Switzerland, Czechia, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Austria and Great Britain.


Toronto is one win away from advancing to the Professional Women’s Hockey League final. Brandon’s Kristen Campbell made 21 saves as Toronto blanked Minnesota 2-nothing and lead the best-of-five semifinal 2-0.


The Manitoba Junior Baseball League’s Opening Day Showcase takes place today. All eight teams will play a pair of games at Optimist Park in Winnipeg. The Altona Bisons meet the Interlake Blue Jays at 1 p.m. and the Carillon Sultans at 4 p.m. The Pembina Valley Orioles face the Sultans at 1 p.m. and the Blue Jays at 4 p.m.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 0-2 to start the 2024 American Association season. The Fish fell 6-4 to Cleburne. Thomas Dillard, Hill Alexander and Brian O’Grady homered for the Railroaders. Adam Hall had two of the Goldeyes five hits in the game.
